In this podcast we explore several of the most important reasons that EFT practitioners do not succeed in business. The impact of the fear of being seen and fear of success will almost always have greater impact than the desire to help others and have a successful practice. The core childhood based survival strategies of loss aversion and and negativity bias allow the perception of our inner 5 year olds to become the managers and marketing directors of our business. Let’s explore some of the ways to transform this upside down success plan!
Fear of being seen and fear of success aren’t opposites — they’re the same protective strategy wearing different outfits. Both exist to keep you small enough to feel safe.
Loss aversion and negativity bias explain why this particular fear pattern is so sticky and so hard to talk yourself out of. Research on loss aversion found that the pain of losing something is felt roughly twice as strongly as the pleasure of gaining something of equal value — which means a practitioner’s brain isn’t weighing “the client I might gain by being visible” against “the criticism I might face.”
It’s weighing a vivid, certain discomfort against a vague, uncertain reward, and discomfort wins almost every time.
Negativity bias compounds this: because the brain evolved to prioritize threat detection over reward-seeking, it will manufacture the worst-case social outcome (being mocked, rejected, exposed as a fraud) far more vividly than it will imagine the best-case outcome (being fully booked).
Together, these two biases are why “just be brave and post the video” fails as advice — the practitioner isn’t being irrational, they’re running exactly the calculation their brain is built to run. It’s also why the diagnostic process above matters more than willpower: you’re not overriding the bias, you’re finding the specific memory that’s feeding it and defusing that instead.
For a practitioner, this shows up in two connected phases of the same fear cycle, and most of your audience is living in one or bouncing between both.
Phase 1: Fear of being seen — this is what keeps a practitioner from ever getting in front of clients in the first place.
- Won’t post video content, or posts but never promotes it
- Undercharges so they never have to stand behind their expertise publicly
- Avoids networking or referral asks because it means being known as the expert
- Tells themselves “I need more training first” — a socially acceptable way to stay hidden
Phase 2: Fear of success — this is what kicks in the moment visibility starts working.
- Self-sabotages right as momentum builds …examples include canceling a launch, go quiet after a good month, you don’t respond to email or social media interests right away
