During the COVID pandemic, about 4 in 10 adults in the U.S. have reported symptoms of anxiety or depression, up from 1 in 10 in the 6 months preceding the pandemic. Many adults (and children) are experiencing increased negative impacts on their mental health and well-being, such as difficulty sleeping, increases in alcohol consumption or substance use and more.
We are witnessing levels of anger outbursts and dysregulation within families and across social media. Aggressive and violent behaviors have become commonplace on airplanes, in restaurants, school board meetings and more. These challenging times, filled with uncertainty about when things will “return to normal” have only served to escalate people’s responses to various situations.
